How to prepare for challenging conversations - Deborah Augustine Elam
How do you prepare for challenging conversations? Some people practice what they are going to say repeatedly, some take notes, and others even power pose in the mirror. Though all of these are viable strategies, do they falter in the face of racism? To be an active participant and engaged listener in race-based discussions, one must first take some time to be daringly introspective. Whether it is through unpacking your privileges, examining your positionality, or addressing your own unconscious biases, there is a multitude of ways you to prepare. Remember to hold space for authenticity, transparency, and grace in these conversations. They will not always be easy but that is a part of the necessary learning and growing process!
