From Physician to Executive to Board Leader: Bridging Clinical Insight with Business Strategy — Karen Hill
For many physicians, stepping into leadership feels like crossing into a foreign world — one filled with balance sheets, operational metrics, and strategic decisions. But I’ve always believed leadership isn’t about moving away from patient care; it’s about broadening the impact. My career journey — from physician, to executive leader, to board member — has been about connecting the worlds of medicine, business, and strategy to ensure patient-centered care remains at the heart of decision-making.
The Transferable Skills of a Physician-Executive
My foundation as a physician trained me to make high-stakes decisions, weigh ethical considerations, and put people first. As an executive, I added new dimensions — financial stewardship, operational turnaround, scaling practices, and leading diverse teams. Those experiences taught me how to align mission with margin, ensuring organizations deliver both quality outcomes and sustainable growth.
This combination of clinical grounding and executive leadership translates directly into boardroom value. Boards need directors who can understand complexity, challenge assumptions, and advise management teams from a position of “having been there.” I bring the perspective of both a frontline physician and an executive who has navigated business realities.
From Leading to Advising: A Board Perspective
Today, as a board member at Delfina Health — an AI-driven startup supporting pregnant women with better access to care — I help the executive team move from idea to scalable business model. The founders began with a personal mission to solve an urgent gap in maternal health. My role has been to help translate that passion into what payers, health systems, and investors need to see: scalable solutions that balance clinical impact with financial sustainability.
This kind of advisory work is the essence of serving on a board — guiding leaders by sharing lessons learned, asking the right questions, and ensuring strategies consider not just individual stories but systemic, cultural, and socioeconomic needs.
Looking Ahead
The trajectory from physician to executive to board member has given me a unique, holistic perspective on healthcare. I understand how clinical realities intersect with financial imperatives, policy constraints, and innovation opportunities. On a board, my goal is to bring this blend of insight to help organizations not only grow but do so with equity, sustainability, and patient impact at the forefront.
