Bridging DEI and HR: My Journey as a Cultural Transformist - Ovell Barbee
As a human resources leader with a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), I’ve seen firsthand how these elements can serve as catalysts for cultural transformation within organizations. My belief is simple: to cultivate a thriving workplace culture, it’s essential to ensure that every employee feels heard and valued.
One of the pivotal moments in my career came when I was brought in to change the culture of a large organization. Rather than implementing changes based solely on directives from the top, I took a different approach. I immersed myself in the workforce, conducting interviews with employees at all levels to understand their challenges and the aspects of the company they cherished. This process involved asking the right questions and truly listening to their experiences.
Through these conversations, I gained invaluable insights into the underlying issues affecting employee morale and engagement. I learned what motivated them, what barriers they faced, and what they valued most in their work environment.
Armed with this understanding, I devised a comprehensive plan for culture change that aligned with both the organization’s strategic goals and the needs of its employees. This plan focused on fostering an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives were not only welcomed but celebrated. By implementing DEI initiatives that encouraged open dialogue and collaboration, we created a culture where everyone felt empowered to contribute.
One of my core principles is that every employee’s voice matters. By prioritizing transparency and communication, I foster a culture where feedback is actively sought and acted upon. This approach not only enhances employee engagement but also drives innovation and growth. When individuals feel valued and heard, they are more likely to invest in their work and contribute positively to the organization.
My journey as a cultural transformist has been shaped by my dual focus on DEI and HR. By understanding the workforce, listening to their voices, and creating an inclusive culture, I’ve helped organizations thrive. It’s a continuous process, but the results — improved employee satisfaction, enhanced collaboration, and a more vibrant workplace — are worth the effort.
