As we enter the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Fire Horse, it causes me to think about the significance of this coming year. The descriptions of the year are as follows: this will be a transformative period, characterized by innovations and breakthroughs. As I think about preparing for such a year, I reflect on my own mindset and my ability to emotionally and psychologically get ready for such opportunities.

As we open our phones and read the news each day, the environment around us feels destabilizing and chaotic. The pace of change is relentless, and the uncertainty can be exhausting.

So what do we do?

As leaders, it feels more important now than ever to acknowledge that we can actually do something positive to get our mindset ready for positive change and opportunities. The question is how. Here are three practices I am focusing on as I step into this new year.

First, let go of what I cannot control. There will always be forces outside our influence. Holding tightly to them drains energy and clouds judgment. Letting go is not about disengaging or giving up. It is about freeing ourselves to focus on where we can truly make a difference.

Second, re-anchor myself in purpose. I ask myself: What is the difference I can make? With whom can I make it? Purpose grounds us. It reminds us why we show up and how our efforts, even small ones, contribute to something meaningful.

Third, be mindful and aware in every moment of the opportunities and doors I can open — whether through personal mentoring or more substantive breakthroughs in my work. Opportunities do not always arrive with fanfare. Being present allows us to recognize them when they appear.

Overall, I am optimistic and hopeful as I enter this new year — for the difference I can make and for the opportunities that are yet to come.

The Year of the Fire Horse invites transformation. My intention is to meet it with clarity, purpose, and openness to what lies ahead.
