Susan Schoenfeld, an expert advisor to families of wealth, recently spoke on how the events of 2020 along with the political climate can impact families. Susan further delves into how such events have the potential to cause friction amongst families. Each generation has grown with their own unique perspective on life and considerations of what is ‘right’ or ‘wrong.’ Susan reinforces the idea of family communication in which each person is permitted to speak their mind, and is heard by others with respect.

“Older and younger generations alike have come to be a lot more socially aware this year. The Black Lives Movement has energized this awareness, especially amongst the younger generations.

“Numerous issues arise from this in the governance sphere, one of them being the need to reconcile generational differences of opinion. Making sure that all voices are heard becomes all the more important when each person at a table has a different point of view.

“Today, when the nation is so divided, the need to listen to other people’s point of view is critical — even if you disagree with them. Be it Thanksgiving or any other family gathering, the possibility of conflicting views is higher than ever. The need for respectfully listening and giving voice to other members of your family and their passions to come through is critically important.”
